TAD approval in Germany: when is FSD coming?

Germany has no national approval. The Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) is reviewing the Dutch approval and, according to heise, also wants to test a vehicle itself. On 6 October 2026 the Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV) announced an agreement with Tesla from talks in September:

  • The system may exceed the speed limit by at most 10 %.
  • The driver remains 100 % responsible.
  • Tesla offered to rename the system “Tesla Assisted Driving” (done since 9 Oct).
  • Germany supports a swift EU-wide approval.

“My goal is for Tesla drivers to be able to use the benefits of Assisted Driving across the entire EU as quickly as possible.”
German Federal Minister of Transport Steffen Bilger (translated) · BMV

Plan B: the national route

If no agreement is reached at EU level, one would have to talk about “what could be done in Germany”, Bilger said according to dpa at a Tagesspiegel Background conference. Legally, that would be a national recognition under Art. 39(5) Reg. (EU) 2018/858, valid only in Germany.

18.6 % of the EU population lives in Germany. A German yes would be the largest single step towards the 65 % threshold.

Frequently asked questions about Tesla Assisted Driving

What is Tesla Assisted Driving?

Tesla Assisted Driving (TAD) is the new European name for Tesla’s driver assistance system previously called “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)” (FSD). It is an SAE Level 2 assistance system: it can steer, brake and accelerate, but the driver must stay attentive at all times and remains fully responsible. It is not autonomous driving.

What is the difference from FSD?

Functionally none (explained in detail). On 9 October 2026 Tesla only changed the name on its European websites (TechCrunch). The German transport ministry (BMV) had called the name “FSD” “somewhat misleading”. In the US the system is still called “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)”.

When will TAD be approved EU-wide?

There is no date. The responsible EU committee (TCMV) did not vote on 6 October 2026; a vote is expected in December 2026 at the earliest. Until then, individual countries can recognise the Dutch approval nationally. Germany supports EU-wide approval after its agreement with Tesla; according to heise/dpa, minister Bilger does not rule out a national route if the EU route fails.

How does EU approval work?

The Dutch authority RDW granted a provisional type approval under Art. 39 of Regulation (EU) 2018/858 on 10 April 2026. Other countries can recognise it nationally, as eight countries have done so far. EU-wide validity requires a qualified majority in the Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles (TCMV): at least 15 of the 27 countries, together representing at least 65 % of the EU population (Council of the EU).

Is TAD approved in my country?

Choose your country in the top bar or tap it on the map. Every country has its own page with status, date and source, e.g. the Netherlands, Germany or France.

When is TAD (FSD) coming to Germany?

There is no date yet (as of 10 Oct 2026). Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) is reviewing the Dutch approval, and the federal transport ministry supports EU-wide approval. The EU committee (TCMV) vote is expected in December 2026 at the earliest; a national route has not been ruled out. All about TAD in Germany.

Is FSD allowed in Germany?

No, not yet (as of 10 Oct 2026). Tesla Assisted Driving – formerly “FSD (Supervised)” – is not approved in Germany; status: Under review. BMV: agreement with Tesla (max. 10 % speed tolerance, driver 100 % responsible, renaming to “Tesla Assisted Driving”). Germany supports the EU procedure; KBA is reviewing. No national approval. So far it is only allowed in countries that have recognised the Dutch approval. All about TAD in Germany.

Which countries have approved FSD / TAD?

As of 10 Oct 2026, 8 of 27 EU countries have approved Tesla Assisted Driving (formerly FSD Supervised) nationally: Netherlands, Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, Belgium, Slovenia, Czechia, Croatia. Together they cover about 12.7 % of the EU population. There is no EU-wide approval yet. View the Europe map.

How much does TAD (FSD) cost?

There is no official TAD price for most countries yet. In the Netherlands, “FSD (Supervised)” costs €99 per month as a subscription according to Tweakers (Dutch), 11 May 2026; the €7,500 one-time purchase was discontinued on 15 May 2026. Prices may differ by country and change – Tesla’s configurator is authoritative.
