What is Tesla Assisted Driving (TAD)?

The renaming of FSD (Supervised) explained · Last updated:

Since 9 October 2026, Tesla no longer markets its driver assistance system in Europe as “Full Self-Driving (Supervised)”, but as “Tesla Assisted Driving”. According to Reuters, the old FSD pages on the European Tesla websites – including Germany, Spain, the Netherlands and Slovakia – redirect to a new page.

Why the new name?

On 6 October 2026 the German Federal Ministry of Transport (BMV) called the name “FSD” “somewhat misleading”: the system does not take over the entire driving task, and the driver must remain attentive at all times. In talks with minister Steffen Bilger in September, Tesla offered to rename the system “Tesla Assisted Driving”. At the same time, the BMV and Tesla agreed that the system may exceed the speed limit by at most 10 %; since then Germany has supported a swift EU-wide approval.

How does approval work in Europe?

The Dutch authority RDW granted a provisional EU type approval under Art. 39 of Regulation (EU) 2018/858 on 10 April 2026. Other countries can adopt it nationally. EU-wide approval requires a qualified majority in the Technical Committee on Motor Vehicles (TCMV): at least 15 of the 27 countries, together representing at least 65 % of the EU population. A vote is expected in December 2026 at the earliest. The Europe map shows the current status per country; for Germany see TAD in Germany.
